EU Commission unveils policy paper to boost AI integration in European Science and Innovation

The EU Commission published a policy brief underscoring AI’s crucial role in advancing European science and innovation. Acknowledging AI’s transformative influence on research, the brief calls for a customised European Research Area (ERA) policy to accelerate AI implementation in science. By harnessing AI’s capabilities, scientists can expedite discoveries, address complex challenges, and stimulate economic progress.

Commissioner Iliana Ivanova stressed AI’s enhancement of Europe’s scientific capabilities, which is vital for upholding competitiveness and technological independence. The brief delineates strategic measures, such as reducing barriers to adoption, reinforcing AI’s data infrastructure, allocating research investments, monitoring AI’s impact on research careers, and tackling ethical issues.

This policy is in harmony with the EU’s AI strategy and the ERA framework. President Ursula von der Leyen highlighted AI’s societal advantages and risks, reflected in the EU strategy’s twin pillars: Trustworthy AI and Excellence in AI. The proposed AI Act aims to globally regulate AI’s development and deployment, while the Coordinated Plan on AI nurtures credible AI leadership.
