Ethiopia develops media campaigns software ahead of elections

The Ethiopian Mass Media Authority (EMMA) has unveiled an automated software technology that allocates airtime and newspaper space to political parties in advance of the forthcoming general elections. The aim is to provide the fair distribution of campaign advertising opportunities among political parties.

EMMA Communication Director Abera Wondowson explained that the system works by attaching a specific code to each contesting political party. Electronic media airtime and newspaper columns would then be allocated to the parties without bias. Civil society organisations were invited to observe the system as well as other aspects of the election.
