EIB backs Nokia research into 5G-Advanced and AI-driven 6G
Nokia plans to use the loan to accelerate advanced 5G and 6G research across the EU.
The European Investment Bank has agreed to lend up to €870 million to Finnish telecommunications company Nokia to support research into next-generation mobile network technologies, including 5G-Advanced and AI-powered 6G systems.
The financing will support Nokia’s research and development in radio access networks, covering both hardware and software. The programme focuses on improving performance, energy efficiency and cybersecurity, while preparing for deeper AI integration in future networks.
Backed by an InvestEU guarantee, the operation supports European Union priorities around digital infrastructure, strategic autonomy and secure communications. The research activities will be carried out across several EU member states, with major work planned in Poland, Finland, France and Germany.
The loan facility will be split into two tranches: €435 million committed in December 2025, with a second tranche expected in mid-2026. Disbursement will follow Nokia’s multi-year investment schedule, aligned with its ongoing R&D programme.
Nokia said the funding will help advance its ambition to lead the next phase of connectivity, as Europe seeks to strengthen its position in global telecoms amid growing competition and rising demand for AI-native networks.
