EDPS calls for pan-European approach to the COVID-19 pandemic

Following privacy concerns over the use of COVID-19 tracking apps across tEurope, European Data Protection Supervisor (EDPS) Wojciech Wiewiórowski has published a letter calling for the creation of a pan-European ‘COVID-19 mobile application’. Wiewiórowski added that the EU should co-ordinate with the World Health Organization (WHO) to ensure ‘data protection by design globally’. According to Euractiv, the EDPS added that the recent proliferation in temporary broadcast identifiers and Bluetooth technologies used in mobile contact tracing apps, could provide a ‘useful path to achieve privacy and personal data protection’.
