EC opens in depth investigation of Google’s Fitbit acquisition

The European Commission (EC) announced an in-depth investigation into the planned €2.1 billion acquisition of Fitbit by Google. The EC’s main concern is how the increased data, especially health data, would give Google a dominant position in the online advertising market. Margrethe Vestager, vice president of the EC, responsible for competition policy, said in a statement: ‘Our investigation aims to ensure that control by Google over data collected through wearable devices as a result of the transaction does not distort competition’. The EC has to conclude the investigation in 90 days.
