Costa Rica to adopt biometric passport in 2022

Costa Rica’s General Directorate of Migration and Foreigners is in the process of implementing a new biometric passport. The passport will have a chip incorporating biometric data such as face and fingerprint together with personal information. In addition to the electronic chip, the new passport design captures aspects of Costa Rica such as biodiversity, renewable energy as well as local talent. Citizens holding valid passports do not need to apply for the new passport, which is expected to be rolled out in the first quarter of 2022.
