Comprehensive Sexual education helps protect children: Commissioner of Human Rights COE

The Commissioner of Human Rights, Council of Europe (COE) has highlighted the importance  and right of children to undergo  sex education as it may prevent them from falling prey to sexual abuse. This will help to build a safe and inclusive community.

The Council of Europe Convention on Protection of Children against Sexual Exploitation and Sexual Abuse (“the Lanzarote Convention”)  expressed concern on the rise of child abuse online during the COVID-19 lockdown period  when children are spending more time online. The convention shredded on the need for schools to provide sexuality education and urged states to improve information on risks and rights of children online,along with counselling  and support services.
