Clearview’s facial recognition system sparks serious concerns

Following the New York Times investigation into the company Clearview AI, many are now demanding answers to its founder, Hoan Ton-That. This company developed a secretive facial recognition app and markets its product to law enforcement, building on a dataset of over three billion face images collected on websites like Facebook, YouTube, and Venmo. According to CNET, a US Democratic senator has issued an open letter requesting information from Clearview, including a full list of any entities and law enforcement agencies currently using the technology, as well as details on any past security breaches and on Clearview’s employee access privileges.  According to the Electronic Frontiers Foundation, ‘the solution to the Clearview problem is clear: comprehensive federal privacy legislation that gives consumers real power over their data and real power to fight back’.
