China sets up advanced policing lab

China Electronics Technology Group Corporation has set up a laboratory to research advanced policing techniques such as prediction of criminal behaviour and emotion recognition. The lab is known as National Engineering Laboratory (NEL) for Big Data Application on Social Security Risks Sensing, Prevention and Control. The company has advanced grants to academics in China and the UK to improve research in areas such as predicting areas where crimes are likely to take place, reconciling previous surveillance footage and using advanced facial recognition techniques to study emotions.

China has increasingly been relying on technology to police its large population.
