Catalan Internet project ‘Guifi.net’ wins European Broadband Award

A Catalan project to create an open and community centric Internet was awarded the first ever European Broadband Award for best project in the category of innovative financing models, business and investment. Gufi.net was founded in 2004 by the municipality of Vic which managed to adpot an investment strategy that succeeded in bringing together ISPs, volunteers, and public administrations. More than 30,000 homes are now connected thanks to ‘Guifi.net’. The project sought to connec isolated rural areas without Wi-Fi access, and has grown exponentially since then
