Canadian PM welcomes EU leaders for green tech trade and research talks

In a forthcoming diplomatic meeting set for late November, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau will host European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and European Council President Charles Michel in St. John’s, Newfoundland, for the 19th Canada-EU Leaders’ Summit.
The European Union and Canada have convened leaders’ summits biennially since 2017 alongside their Strategic Partnership Agreement. However, this meeting is particularly significant as it will take place at a strategic port linking Europe and North America, aligning with a heightened focus on clean technology trade across the Atlantic.
The Summit aims to advance efforts in the EU-Canada Strategic Partnership concerning essential raw materials and enhance collaboration in climate, green energy, and digital matters.
Why does it matter?
In 2022, the combined trade in goods and services between Canada and the EU reached $147.0 billion. This collaboration underscores the EU’s growing importance as a strategic partner for Canada in a world marked by growing political and economic uncertainty.
