Brookings: Internet shutdowns cost countries $2.4 billion in GDP last year

Brookings has published a study according to which Internet shutdowns has cost countries approximately 2.4 billion US dollar last year. India’s economy was most affected, with a loss of almost a billion dollar due to Internet bans. The report notes that Internet disruptions are on the rise, often for reasons related to security and the protection of local businesses. Yet, while government officials seem to be increasingly comfortable with blocking access, these measures significantly undermine economic growth.
