Bali switched off mobile Internet to mark the Hindu holiday

The mobile Internet shutdown on Bali was made in favour of the Nyepi holiday (a Day of Silence) based on an appeal put forward by Balinese civil and religious groups. This holiday is a cultural practice of thoughtful reflection, a point for pause, respect and consideration. This year for the first time, the mobile providers agreed to turn off mobile Internet for 24 hours. Services for security, aviation, hospitals and disaster agencies were not inflicted. Some of the citizens considered the shutdown to be an excessive interference by the Balinese government, reported Al Jazeera.
