Balance between curtailing terrorist influence online and freedom of speech addressed at UN Counter-Terrorism Committee

The United Nations Counter-Terrorism Committee, which held a special meeting in New York, addressed the influence of terrorists online. According to Jeffrey Feltman, Under-Secretary-General for Political Affairs, terrorists’ use of the Internet ‘brings us to the fine line between benevolent and malevolent: freedoms and human rights apply to everyone anywhere, but only as long as they do not call into question the enjoyment of these freedoms and human rights by others’.
