AWS to invest $1.3 billion in Italy’s data centre expansion

An investment to boost cloud infrastructure and economic growth.

Telefonica Germany and AWS explore quantum tech for 6G networks and encryption.

Amazon Web Services (AWS) announced plans to invest 1.2 billion euros ($1.3 billion) in Italy over the next five years to expand its data centre operations in the country. This investment is part of AWS’s broader strategy to enhance its cloud services across Europe, building on its initial launch of a cloud region in Italy in 2020. The company is also aiming to invest a total of 2 billion euros by 2029.

The investment is expected to create up to 5,500 jobs by 2029, spanning various sectors such as construction, facility maintenance, engineering, telecommunications, and other roles within the local economy. AWS’s Italian clientele includes high-profile companies like luxury carmaker Ferrari and insurance giant Assicurazioni Generali.

AWS’s expansion in Italy follows similar moves in other European countries. In May, the company unveiled a 15.7 billion euro investment in Spain’s Aragon region and announced plans for a 7.8 billion euro investment in Germany through 2040. This ongoing expansion underscores Amazon’s commitment to strengthening its cloud infrastructure across the continent.
