Aussie state police considering biometric platform

Australia’s New South Wales Police (NSWP) has issued a request for information (RFI) for an integrated biometric platform. While the RFI is not a call for tenders, it indicates plans to shift from the current system to a digital system that incorporates facial recognition technology. Some of the objectives stated in the RFI include to better “anticipate, detect and disrupt crime”. NSWP is also looking for ways to have more complete profiles of offenders.

Earlier in the year, Australia’s Human Rights Commission had called for a ban on facial recognition technology pending development of new laws as well as appointment of an independent artificial intelligence safety commissioner to oversee human rights in technologies such as artificial intelligence.
