Are smartphones increasing the gender gap?

According to the Wall Street Journal’s Why the Vast Majority of Women in India Will Never Own a Smartphone, India is quick to adopt new technologies, which are often promoted as social equalisers. However, if  social norms and even community  decrees bar use of technologies (like smartphones) that increase access to the Internet and information to women, this digital divide will continue to grow, powered by some of the very technologies that purport to diminish it.
