Arcom holds consultation to facilitate researchers’ access to platform data

Arcom consults to aid researchers in accessing platform data by gathering insights through a public consultation to address misinformation. They strive to create a research network to analyze online impacts, platform decisions, and adhere to the Digital Services Act while respecting platform rights. Twitter is noted as a platform providing data access, which Arcom hopes to see extended post-Act implementation.

France’s digital and audiovisual media regulatory Arcom hosted a public consultation, asking for inputs from NGOs, researchers, and tech companies about how to tackle online misinformation and disinformation. Arcom aims to establish an EU-wide research network that studies the impacts of online usage, scrutinises platforms’ decision-making, and flags potential breaches of the coming Digital Services Act (DSA) to enforce content moderation in ways that still account for platforms’ rights and interests. Arcom council member Benoît Loutrel cited Twitter as the only platform that has allowed researchers to access platform data through its Twitter APIs (application programming interfaces). Arcom wishes to see more access to platform data for researchers after the DSA enters into force.
