AI centre launched in Bulgaria with Amazon, Google, DeepMind support

The Institute for Computer Science, Artificial Intelligence and Technology (INSAIT) was launched in Sofia, Bulgaria, with the aim to ‘become a leading scientific institute for computer science and artificial intelligence (AI) and a research powerhouse’. The centre is created in partnership with ETH Zurich and EPFL Lausanne, and is enjoying financial support from Amazon Web Services (US$3.75 million), Google (US$3 million), DeepMind (US$285,000), SiteGround (US$6.5 million), Bulgarian entrepreneurs (US$600,000), as well as a US$100 million endowment from the government of Bulgaria. INSAIT is expected to nurture local talent, attract international academics and research laboratories, and have a ‘significant economic and social impact in the region’.
