Romania’s National Artificial Intelligence Strategy for 2024-2027

Strategies and Action Plans

Romania’s government approved the National Artificial Intelligence Strategy for 2024-2027 in July 2024. This strategic document outlines the country’s approach to adopting and integrating AI technologies across various sectors, aligning with the European Union’s ambitions to become a global leader in AI.

The strategy emphasises the integration of advanced technologies in public administration, particularly by the tax authority (ANAF), to enhance risk analysis, public tenders, and optimise public spending. It also highlights the importance of establishing a regulatory framework tailored to national needs and fostering collaboration among academia, businesses, research institutions, and public administration to drive innovation and investment.

The strategic framework focuses on five key areas:

  1. Digital public administration
  2. Digital economy
  3. Digital education
  4. Cybersecurity
  5. Emerging technologies include AI, 5G, IoT, quantum communications, robotics, blockchain, and smart cities.

The government anticipates that AI will significantly transform Romania’s economic landscape, contributing to economic growth and social prosperity. The implementation of the national AI strategy will involve intelligence services SRI and SIE as part of an inter-ministerial commission to ensure alignment with EU regulations, such as the AI Act.
