W3C Recommendation on graphics accessibility API mappings
October 2018
Principles and Recommendations
Summary
The Graphics Accessibility API Mappings specification provides role mappings for the roles in the WAI-ARIA Graphics Module to enhance accessibility for complex graphics in web documents and applications. Traditional WAI-ARIA 1.0 focused only on individual, non-interactive images. The Graphics Module introduces roles that convey the structure of graphics, such as labelled diagrams and data charts. This specification guides user agents on exposing these roles to accessibility APIs, ensuring assistive technologies can access the semantic information.
Key resources supporting this specification include: Accessible Rich Internet Applications (WAI-ARIA) 1.1, WAI-ARIA Graphics Module, Core Accessibility API Mappings (CORE-AAM) 1.1, SVG Accessibility API Mappings (SVG-AAM) 1.0, Accessible Name and Description: Computation and API Mappings 1.1 and WAI-ARIA Authoring Practices Guide.
