DigWatch Weekly Digest Banner

Dear readers,

Welcome back to the Digital Watch space! We wish you a prosperous and happy 2024!

In the coming weeks, we will fine-tune DW Digest to reflect the rapid changes in AI and the digital space. We’d love to know what you’d like to see in DW Digests. Would you prefer to receive it on Friday afternoon instead of Monday morning? Would you like to receive daily updates as well? Please take 2 minutes of your time to share your suggestions for the future of DW Digest.

The first weekly digest in 2024 is released at the beginning of yet another year of high uncertainties. As we discussed in our AI and digital predictions for 2024, broader geopolitical and societal tensions, ranging from China-USA relations to a series of major elections around the world, will have a significant impact on the tech sector. The main question is whether AI and digital technology will alleviate or exacerbate societal polycrisis.

The first week of the year provided a glimpse into AI governance, with OpenAI responding to the New York Times’ lawsuit and Italy’s G7 presidency prioritising AI and Africa.

Since the beginning of the year, new developments have included online safety for children and teenagers, semiconductor geopolitics, and cybersecurity.

We invite you to join 2024 AI and digital predictions event on 11 January.

E-see you soon!

Artificial Intelligence (AI)

OpenAI responded to The New York Times’ copyright lawsuit, defending its use of copyrighted material in AI development. The company argued that LLMs cannot be created without using copyrighted materials. OpenAI also intends to shift data of its European customers to Ireland as ‘a GDPR-friendly jurisdiction’.

The US Securities and Exchange Commission ruled against Apple’s and Disney’s attempts to avoid shareholder votes on the companies’ uses of AI, after a labour groups requested reports on such uses. This decision represents a significant step towards increased corporate transparency and responsibility in AI applications.

Africa and AI will be top priorities for Italy’s G7 presidency. This initiative reflects a strategic approach to addressing global challenges, with a focus on the role of AI in international relations and development.
