Emerging Technologies

The frontier of technology advances rapidly and constantly; AI, IoT, quantum computing, cloud computing, nanotechnology, and many more are accelerating developments in scientific fields such as synthetic biology, neuroscience, medical science, and space exploration. The fast-moving frontier and the increasing convergence of technologies create tremendous opportunities for us to resolve critical issues in the environment, poverty, inequality, agriculture, etc. But how do policymakers mitigate the negative effects and promote the benefits of these technologies if they are shooting at a moving target?

The Geneva Centre for Security Policy (GCSP) and the Geneva Science-Policy Interface (GSPI) take a deep dive into emerging technologies in their policy analyses, examining the former’s implications for warfare, humanitarian actions, legal rules, etc. Health AI looks into how AI and other emerging technologies can provide cost-efficient cases for the integration of AI in the healthcare sector. The International Telecommunication Union (ITU) has established a focus group for agriculture (FG-AI4A) on using AI, IoT, and relevant technologies for the optimisation of agricultural production processes. The International Organization for Standardization (ISO) is working assiduously on producing new standards and guidelines for policy and technical experts to reference.
