The Commonwealth Secretariat is hosting an election professionals training event for the Caribbean and the Americas region in Port of Spain, Trinidad and Tobago, as part of an Australian-funded initiative.

According to the Secretariat, the Commonwealth Election Professionals Initiative is a multi-year project funded by the government of Australia that provides professional development opportunities to election professionals in Electoral Management Bodies across member countries.

The regional event is being delivered in partnership with the Elections and Boundaries Commission of Trinidad and Tobago, which is also marking 50 years of administering elections in the country. The Secretariat says the training will bring together electoral administrators from across the region.

The training is organised around the theme ‘Artificial Intelligence: Opportunities & Risks for Electoral Integrity in the Commonwealth Caribbean & Americas’. According to the programme, participants will examine the fundamentals of AI, safeguarding information integrity with AI, ethical issues and risks in AI-powered elections, legal and regulatory considerations for AI in elections, and strategy presentations and evaluations.
