Reddit begins testing verified profiles

Public figures can opt in, while NSFW-linked accounts remain excluded from early testing.

Reddit has begun testing verified profiles for public figures, adding grey checkmarks to a small group of trusted contributors. The pilot aims to curb misinformation while preserving the platform’s long-standing culture of pseudonymity.

The company says the feature helps users identify journalists, experts and brands when accuracy matters. Moderators, who often handle verification manually, are expected to benefit from reduced workload. Accounts connected to NSFW activity are excluded as Reddit refines criteria for participation.

Reddit is currently verifying users through an internal process, with plans to shift to third-party confirmation later. The platform stresses that verification is not a status symbol but a tool for clarity. Some recognised figures may decline involvement even after broader rollout.

The move follows Reddit’s criticism of the Australian under-16 social media ban, which it described as legally flawed. The company continues emphasising community choice while exploring safeguards that support informed engagement.
