AI Safety Institute launched in Australia

Emerging AI technologies will be assessed by a government safety body, ensuring responsible adoption and protection for Australians.

The government is creating a dedicated AI safety body to monitor emerging technologies, advise regulators, and support transparent, responsible use across industry and public services.

Australia is establishing the Australian AI Safety Institute to evaluate emerging AI technologies and help manage potential risks to the public. The institute will work with government agencies, industry and international partners to ensure AI development aligns with Australian values.

The new body will advise on legislation, support best practice regulation and monitor compliance to uphold fairness and transparency. It will also assess AI tools dynamically, ensuring Australians can benefit from AI safely while mitigating potential harms.

The institute forms part of the Albanese Government’s National AI Plan, focusing on both economic opportunities and public safety. Collaborations with research centres and global safety networks will enable the institute to publish findings and guide responsible AI adoption across the country.
