China releases AI development plan

The State Council in China has released the country’s artificial intelligence (AI) development plan, intended to contribute to making China the world leader in AI by 2030 and build a national AI industry of $150 billion. According to media reports, the plan covers a wide range of areas, from voice recognition and gathering evidence and reading court documents, to robots to be used in deep-sea exploration and military security. The plan outlines three milestones: by 2020, companies and research facilities are expected to match the level of other countries such as the USA; by 2025, AI is expected to become ‘a key impetus for economic transformation’, and by 2030, China is to become ‘the world’s premier AI innovation center’.
