Healthy consumer environment is a key factor in economic growth and its best understood by the EU, which has been working since 1987 to build a fair and single market for consumption, which to this day has a comprehensive set of consumer rights. However, major events such as “Dieselgate”, where some carmakers have installed technology in cars to cheat the emissions test, or the widespread use of unfair mortgage banking agreements, call into question the quality of the EU mechanism that aims to fight these issues. The Communication maintains that the EU must find answers to new consumer policy challenges while at the same time ensuring a fair market for both consumers and businesses.
