Digital human security 2020 in the age of AI: Securing and empowering individuals

Policy Reports

Summary

Since the creation of the World Wide Web in 1989, technological advancements have significantly benefited humanity, enhancing global interaction, reducing poverty, facilitating medical progress, and promoting peace. Social media, initially celebrated for its role in the Arab Spring, was seen as a tool for mobilization and democracy. However, today’s landscape is more complex and fraught with challenges. The same technologies intended to unite people are now contributing to divisions, with disinformation and propaganda spreading rapidly. Advances in AI exacerbate these issues, which lead to rising demagoguery, racism, and nationalism. Global institutions, created post-World War to foster cooperation, are being undermined. There is a critical need to leverage technology and AI ethically to combat these negative trends, rebuild trust in media and institutions, and promote peace and human rights. The concept of human security, introduced in the 1994 UNDP Human Development Report, should be expanded to include technological threats, ensuring food security, safe living conditions, healthcare, economic stability, education, and protection from fake news and AI developments.
