Directive 2008/114/EC of the Council of 8 December 2008 on the identification and designation of European critical infrastructures and the assessment of the need to improve their protection

Regulations and Policies

This Directive establishes a procedure for the identification and designation of European Critical Infrastructures (ECIs). It introduces a common approach for assessing these infrastructures, with the aim of improving them to better protect the needs of citizens. Technological threats and natural disasters are taken into account in the ECI protection process, but the threat of terrorism takes priority. This Directive presently concerns only the energy and transport sectors and their sub-sectors as identified in Annex I. Other sectors are likely to be added during the revision of the Directive.
