DW Weekly #143 – 19 January 2024

 Page, Text

Dear readers,

This week at the annual meeting of the world’s richest and most powerful in Davos, Switzerland, one of the main themes is AI, with notable leaders engaging in discussions at the World Economic Forum. With businesses and governments rushing to grasp the tech, this year’s meetings will provide a key opportunity to get more globally aligned on adoption and safety.

Some highlights: UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres warned that big technology companies are recklessly pursuing profits from AI, and urgent action is needed to mitigate the risks from the rapidly growing sector. President of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen called for European leadership in responsible AI adoption, focusing on leveraging talent, and industrial data, and providing startups access to supercomputers while making data available in all EU languages. Microsoft’s Satya Nadella urged attendees on a global regulatory approach to the technology but said he feels a ‘broad consensus’ is emerging on guardrails. OpenAI’s Sam Altman said it is essential to adapt an iterative deployment of AI systems, as this approach allows sufficient time for debate, regulation, and control over AI’s impact.

In other news, Australia plans to establish an advisory body for AI oversight and regulation, India enters the LLM race, and the IMF chief advocates for retraining amid AI-driven job changes. OpenAI addressed election misuse concerns, altering its policy. Baidu denied links to China’s military. China bypassed US restrictions on Nvidia chips, while South Korea boosted its industry with tax credits. ASEAN plans a region-wide digital economy agreement, and the UK regulator unveiled a new regime. Meta documents show 100,000 children daily facing harassment online. The French watchdog fined Yahoo! 10 million euros over cookie policy.
