The United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD) will host a seminar 'Making Digital Markets Work for Consumers: Competition, Consumer Protection and Data' online on 5 November 2021.

This online event will provide a global overview of the competition and consumer protection in relation to data protection in digital markets, and discuss effective solutions to address the challenges by consumer and competition agencies in protecting consumers’ data and privacy from unfair and anti-competitive business practices in digital markets. The meeting will be informed by the findings of UNCTAD’s Digital Economy Report 2021: Cross-border Data Flows and Development: For Whom the Data Flow. Main discussion points are:

  • What are the emerging challenges to competition and consumer protection regarding the collection and use of consumers’ personal data in the digital environment?
  • What are some of the effective ways of dealing with those challenges?
