Blocking the bottleneck: Internet shutdowns and ownerships at election times in Sub-Saharan Africa

16 Apr 2018

Geneva, Switzerland

The lecture, 'Blocking the bottleneck: Internet shutdowns and ownerships at election times in Sub-Saharan Africa', will take place on 16 April 2018 at Maison de la paix in Geneva, Switzerland. This lecture is being organised by the Graduate Institute Geneva as part of the Global Governance Colloquium series.

Using qualitative comparative analysis, the lecture aims to link documented Internet shutdowns in sub-Sahara African countries to configurations of Internet Service Provider (ISP) state-majority ownership, regime type, and election violence. Research will underline the importance of varying ownership structures in explaining political effects of Internet penetration, including its role in challenging authoritarian rule.
