The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) is an international organization that aims to promote cooperation in the nuclear field and therefore the use of nuclear energy for peaceful objectives. Despite being established as an independent organisation in 1957, the IAEA reports to the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) and the Security Council. Headquartered in Vienna, the organization has regional safeguards offices in Toronto and Tokyo as well as representations in New York, Geneva, Monaco and Trieste.
