The Global Network Initiative (GNI) is a coalition of ICT companies, civil society organisations, investors and academics, dedicated to the promotion of freedom of expression and privacy in information and communications technologies. GNI provides guidance to the ICT industry on how to protect and advance these two fundamental human rights, especially when faced with pressures from governments to take actions that infringe upon these rights.
Throughout its activities, GNI promotes the rule of law and the adoption of laws, policies and practices that protect and respect freedom of expression and privacy, in accordance with internationally recognised law and standards.
One key achievement of GNI is the ellaboration and adoption of a set of Principles on Freedom of Expression and Privacy, which state the commitment of the GNI’s members to collaborate in the advancement of user rights to freedom of expression and privacy, and provide high-level guidance on how to respect, protect and advance these rights. The principles were developed by companies, investors, civil society organisations and academics. They are accompanied by Implementation Guidelines, which provide further details on how companies on how to put the principles into practice, while also setting a framework for multistakeholder collaboration among companies, NGOs, investors and academics.
