The Industrial Internet Consortium (IIC) brings together technology companies, researchers, universities, and governmental organisations, with the aim to identity, assemble, and promote best practices for accelerating the growth of the industrial Internet. Its work focuses on the use of the Internet in the context of five broad industries: energy, healthcare, manufacturing, smart cities, and transportation.

The mission of the Consortium is to deliver a trustworthy Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) in which systems and devices are securely connected and controlled. In pursuing this mission, the Consortium focuses on the following goals: driving innovation through the creation of new industry use cases and testbeds for real-world applications; defining and developing the reference architecture and frameworks necessary for interoperability; influencing the global dvelopment standards process for Internet and industrial systems; facilitating open forums to share and exchange idea, practices, lessons, and insights; and building confidence around new and innovative approaches to security.

Several working groups created within the Industrial Internet Consortium coordinate and establish the priorities and enabling technologies of the industrial Internet in order to accelerate market adoption and drive down barriers to entry. These groups are clustered into seven areas: business strategy and solution lifecycle, liaison, marketing, security, technology, and testbeds.

Since its creation in 2014, the IIC has produced several publications, technical papers, and white papers, with examples including: the Industrial Internet Connectivity Framework, the Industrial Internet Reference Architecture, the Industrial Internet Security Framework, and Industrial Analytics: the Engine Driving the Industrial Internet of Things Revolution. The Consortium also organises or supports events
