The Malawi Digital Economy Strategy (2021-2026)

Strategies and Action Plans

The Malawi Digital Economy Strategy (2021-2026) is a five-year plan designed to leverage digital technologies to drive economic growth and development in Malawi. It aims to transform Malawi into a self-reliant, upper-middle-income country by 2063, with a focus on enhancing agriculture, industrialisation, and urbanisation. The strategy outlines key areas for action, including increasing internet and device access, advancing e-commerce, and modernising public services.

Core: Infrastructure, access & skills

Targets by 2026:

  • Network access to 80% population and near-universal broadband.
  • Device ownership increased from 51% to 80%, achieved by slashing import taxes, subsidising devices, and distributing tablets to teachers.
  • Energy access lifted to 20%, through promoting household solar and solar charging hubs
