This IEC Academy webinar will examine the critical challenges posed by AI-generated deepfakes and synthetic media, which are becoming increasingly sophisticated and pose serious threats to privacy, cybersecurity, and digital trust. Studies show that most deepfake content targets individuals without their consent, highlighting the urgent need for effective detection and prevention strategies. The session will explore the technology behind deepfakes, their societal impact, and current efforts to combat these threats.

The webinar will also introduce the AI and Multimedia Authenticity Standards Collaboration, launched at the May 2024 AI for Good Global Summit. This global initiative brings together leading organisations—including IEC, ISO, ITU, Adobe, Microsoft, and EPFL—to develop technical standards for AI watermarking and multimedia authenticity aimed at addressing synthetic media risks. Attendees will learn about existing authentication techniques, emerging standards solutions, and receive practical guidance for policymakers and regulators on using international standards to strengthen governance in the evolving landscape of synthetic media.
