The National Artificial Intelligence Strategy of Mauritania for 2025–2029 presents a detailed approach to integrating AI into various aspects of national development. The strategy focuses on six core priorities aimed at transforming the country’s technological landscape. It emphasises enhancing human capacities in AI and data science by introducing training and certification programs across academic and professional levels. The initiative aims to ensure the professional integration of AI experts while building robust capacities in data management and governance.
Research and innovation are central to the strategy, with plans to fund AI projects in universities and startups, establish sustainable financing mechanisms, and create centers of excellence to foster collaboration between academia and industry. Regional and international cooperation is also a key focus, where Mauritania seeks to facilitate knowledge exchange and participation in global AI initiatives while adhering to ethical standards and responsible governance practices. Data governance measures include secure data collection, storage, and sharing protocols to support AI innovation, coupled with a strong legal framework to ensure accessibility and protection.
To modernise its digital infrastructure, the strategy proposes extending broadband access nationwide, optimising cloud solutions, and piloting 5G technologies. Ethical considerations are integral, ensuring compliance with data protection and intellectual property laws while participating in international efforts to develop ethical standards for AI.
AI applications are planned across several critical sectors. In healthcare, AI will be used for early disease detection, monitoring chronic illnesses, and expanding telemedicine services. In education, adaptive learning platforms and smart systems will improve student outcomes and institutional efficiency. Agriculture will benefit from AI-powered solutions for water management, crop yield predictions, and early disease detection. The fishing industry will leverage AI for sustainable resource management, including satellite surveillance to detect illegal activities. In transportation, AI will optimise logistics and enhance operational efficiency. The energy sector will use AI to manage hybrid wind-solar energy production and optimise gas reservoir operations. Defense initiatives include autonomous reconnaissance systems and digital crime detection.
Governance of the strategy will be overseen by a sub-committee under the Supreme Council for Digitalization, involving representatives from key ministries, academia, and the private sector. This body will coordinate activities, assess progress, and propose necessary adjustments.
The overarching goal of the strategy is to position Mauritania as a leader in AI within the region, fostering sustainable development and economic growth through the innovative application of technology.
