Hungarian National AI Strategy for 2020-2030

Strategies and Action Plans

In September 2020, the Hungarian Government released its National AI Strategy for 2020-2030, developed by the Ministry of Innovation and Technology in collaboration with the Artificial Intelligence Coalition. The Coalition, established in 2018, includes over 320 members from government, academia, and the IT industry. This strategy supports the entire AI value chain, from data management to technology application, with goals to strengthen Hungary’s AI ecosystem, focus on key sectors like manufacturing and healthcare, and launch transformative programs benefiting citizens.

The strategy emphasises education, aiming to increase AI awareness and competencies, with goals such as training 8,000 citizens in AI and establishing PhD programs in AI fields. It also includes initiatives for lifelong learning and reskilling, particularly for sectors expected to undergo significant change due to AI.

To foster AI research, Hungary plans to establish a National Laboratory for Autonomous Vehicles and an AI Accelerator Centre. The strategy also outlines support for innovation, including creating an AI Innovation Centre and developing corporate advisory services using AI.

Several transformative programs are highlighted, including initiatives for self-driving vehicles, digital healthcare, climate-driven agriculture, and energy networks focused on renewables. The strategy also addresses the need for AI regulation, ethical frameworks, and robust data management infrastructure.

Hungary aims to enhance its AI infrastructure by increasing supercomputing capacity, developing hybrid cloud solutions for research, and establishing large data centers. The strategy also supports AI applications in addressing societal challenges, such as climate change and managing the COVID-19 pandemic.
