12 May 2017 - 4 Aug 2017

Online

The European Commission has launched a public consultation on the evaluation and revision of the Regulations for the .eu top-level domain (TLD) – the country-code TLD for the European Union.

The consultation is aimed at gathering input for the evaluation, aseessing the .eu regulatory framework against the evaluation criteria:

  • Effectiveness: have the objectives been met?
  • Efficiency: were the costs involved reasonable?
  • Coherence: does the policy complement other actions or are there contradictions?
  • Relevance: is EU action still necessary?
  • EU added-value: can similar changes have been achieved at national/regional level, or did EU action clearly provide added-value?

The .eu TLD was formally established by Regulation 733/2002, while EC Regulation 874/2004 set the rules for the registry and the .eu. The .eu TLD was delegated by Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) in 2005. The European Commission’s 2017 Work Programme foresees the revision of the .eu Regulations is carried out in the context of the Regulatory Fitness and Performance Programme (REFIT) and is preceeded by an evaluation to ensure the .eu legal framework still serves its purpose. It will be the basis for the revision of the.eu regulations.

The consultation is addressed to consumer associations, businesses, academia, public authorities, intergovernmental organisations, as well as citizens.

A summary of the consultation results will be published one month after the end of the consultation period.
