German telecom firm faces €9.6m fine for GDPR breach

1&1 Telecom, a German internet service provider, was fined €9.6m by the German data protection authority for failing to carry out adequate customer ID checks. This fine represents one of the largest penalties since the entry into force of EU’s GDPR. According to the BBC, anyone who called 1&1 Telecom could get extensive personal information about someone else solely by giving their name and date of birth. The company said in a statement that it will appeal the decision.
