Joseph Devin said that after reviewing literature from ITU, the One Planet Network and other sources, the team produced an interactive data map representing a best-case scenario in which all actors disclose all the information they have about an ICT product . The map covered the lifecycle from raw material extraction to the recycler at end of life, while the interviews focused mainly on the upstream half of the chain . He said the team conducted nine interviews, including an expert in mineral extraction, an investigative journalist from the New York Post, an expert on commodity trading, two ICT manufacturing experts from Huawei and Fairphone, and more policy-oriented experts from the EU and research environment as well as UNEP’s One Planet Network .
One of their main findings concerned Fairphone. Devin described it as the strongest example they found of a manufacturer trying to disclose the maximum amount of available information, including repair data, lifecycle data, carbon and environmental data, materials and sourcing data, and supplier social data . Even so, he said Fairphone still faces very strong limits and visibility breaks, especially upstream, because of physical constraints in raw material markets and the complexity and number of actors involved . Mitzi then discussed Tesla as a contrasting case study, explicitly noting that it was “not smartphones” but a different OEM example used to show what a large company with strong capital, leverage and reputational incentives can sometimes achieve . He argued that rapid turnover of ICT products creates pressure on the public to dispose of e-waste sustainably, and that DPPs could help bridge information gaps between manufacturers and end users . Referring to ITU standards L.1070 and L.1071, he said standardised and uniformly displayed information could help consumers and reverse-chain actors such as refurbishers and recyclers make the circular economy more efficient and transparent . He also pointed to lessons from a textiles pilot, where information asymmetry and limited data availability constrained development of a comprehensive system, and argued that DPP rollout in the region would need technical assistance alongside policy . Like the other student team, he interviewed Fairphone and found it a useful model of modular phones and sustainability reporting, but he said even strong impact reports can be too dense for ordinary consumers . Drawing on an interview with Consumers International and a German pilot survey, he said different consumer groups care about sustainability in different ways, so DPPs should not assume a single ideal user . His conclusion was that consumer-facing information needs to be concise, comparable across devices and aligned with what users actually prioritise, rather than assuming that more detail is always better .
Lee also returned the discussion to end-of-life practice through an interview with New Life E-Waste Recycling in Uruguay. He said the organisation currently processes around 200 tons of e-waste annually through largely manual methods, while aiming to scale up . He described barriers including consumer preference for new devices, limited facilities for dealing with materials such as glass and plastics, and broader informal-sector and technical constraints . From the recycler perspective, useful DPP content would include concise information on material composition, batteries and capacitors . He concluded that DPPs may work best in such contexts through a tiered information model, where different actors see different layers of data, and that in regions with uneven capacity they may initially function better as guidelines supported by technical assistance than as rigid mandates .
