UK watchdog investigates TikTok over alleged misinformation on child safety

Ofcom, the UK communications regulator, is delving into concerns surrounding TikTok’s provision of potentially inaccurate information on measures to protect children from harmful content. TikTok attributes the issue to a technical glitch and asserts timely communication with Ofcom.
The investigation focuses on the accuracy of TikTok’s parental control system, ‘Family Pairing,’ expressing worries about potential risks to underage users. Ofcom’s scrutiny extended to Snap and Twitch, acknowledging preventive measures but flagging areas of concern, particularly on Twitch with its open-access content. The regulator also highlighted the ease with which users enter false age and recommended enhancements in safeguarding children across these platforms.
Why does it matter?
This follows the recent approval of the Online Safety Act 2023, mandating that social media platforms protect children from harmful content and imposing fines for non-compliance. The stricter requirements have sparked varied reactions from several tech companies. This month, it instructed adult websites to implement more stringent age verification measures for users, ensuring they are over 18. Once in force, the act will grant Ofcom expanded powers, leading to increased oversight over tech companies and their measures to protect children from harm.
