Safaricom customers redeem one billion loyalty points in first months of COVID-19

The Kenyan mobile network operator Safaricom has announced that over one billion bonga points were redeemed in the Bonga for Good programme introduced during the COVID-19 pandemic. Under the programme, customers can use their loyalty points (known as bonga points) to purchase food and other essential items from registered merchants. Customers can also transfer their bonga points to others. During the pandemic, over 600 000 customers donated their bonga points to others. Top items that points were spent on include food, household items, solar lighting, and entertainment.
