Reporters Without Borders with NewsGuard announced on 11 May the launch of a Journalism Trust Initiative (JTI) Emergency Protocol to help advertisers and others support quality journalism. To provide their clients with greater context for the news they encounter online, hundreds of public libraries around the world are given free access to utilise the NewsGuard browser extension on their public-access computers.

The JTI emergency protocol will first be deployed in Ukraine, where the media have suffered immensely since the start of the Russian invasion, including from the collapse of the advertising market. This would offer up new avenues for funding for failing media and help these newsrooms establish their reputation and transparency to marketers, internet platforms, financiers, and tech businesses.

The first beneficiaries of the programme, funded by the EU Delegation to Ukraine, include leading Ukrainian journalism outlets such as Hromadske, Lb.UA, Novynarnia, Hmarochos, Svoi City and Your City TV.
