AI journalism faces stronger safeguards under New York proposal
A new legislative proposal in New York aims to reshape how AI can be used in newsrooms, raising fresh questions about transparency, labour protections, and the future of trustworthy journalism.
New York lawmakers have introduced the NY FAIR News Act to regulate the use of AI journalism. The proposed legislation would require transparency around AI-generated content and set clear limits on how news organisations can deploy AI in their reporting and production processes.
A key focus of the bill is protecting journalists, newsroom workers, and sources. The legislation would prevent media companies from replacing human workers with AI and introduce safeguards to reduce the risks AI systems pose to journalistic practices and source confidentiality.
The proposal also seeks to preserve public trust in news media by requiring disclosures when AI is substantially used to create published content. Lawmakers argue that such transparency is essential to maintaining confidence in accurate reporting and protecting democratic values.
The bill has received support from major labour unions and forms part of a broader push by New York to strengthen AI governance. The state has already enacted and proposed other measures to regulate AI, signalling continued legislative attention to the societal impacts of AI technologies.
