AI deepfake images fuel school bullying concerns

A rise in AI-generated images among schoolchildren has prompted police to call for stronger parental oversight and education on responsible digital behaviour.

Police warn that pupils using AI tools to create deepfake images are causing serious harm, with some cases crossing legal thresholds under sexual offence laws.

Police on the Isle of Man have warned of a sharp increase in pupils creating AI-generated images to bully or ridicule classmates. Some cases involve deepfakes that may constitute sexual offences.

Officers say children are manipulating photos of peers to create false and harmful scenarios. The behaviour is increasingly used as a form of revenge or as a threat to share content online.

Existing law allows prison sentences of up to three years for making or sharing indecent AI images. Police and schools are urging parents to monitor their children’s online activity actively and to discuss responsible AI use.
