European Space Agency advances blockchain security for 5G satellite networks

Advanced blockchain frameworks could enhance the reliability of next-generation satellite communications through secure data verification and anomaly detection.

The European Space Agency has awarded a three-year development project to test whether blockchain-based technologies can improve anomaly detection and operational security across 5G non-terrestrial networks.

Keysight Technologies will lead the project as prime contractor, while satellite internet of things provider Sateliot will support technical development and satellite mission integration. The initiative is supported through ESA’s Space for 5G/6G and Sustainable Connectivity programme line within its Advanced Research in Telecommunications Systems programme.

The partners will investigate how blockchain, AI, machine learning and digital calibration certificates could establish verifiable records across the network lifecycle, from satellite manufacturing and calibration to in-orbit operations and service delivery.

Development will progress from laboratory research and prototyping to a full demonstration in orbit. The trial will assess blockchain-based trust mechanisms, autonomous anomaly detection and secure telemetry in an operational satellite environment.

ESA said the project could help protect increasingly interconnected terrestrial and non-terrestrial networks against spoofing, tampering and other cyber threats. Findings are also expected to inform the security of future 6G satellite communications.

An in-orbit demonstration could provide practical evidence on whether blockchain-based records and automated anomaly detection can verify network behaviour without compromising the performance and scalability required by 5G and future 6G services.
