The United States Department of Energy (DOE) proposes a new initiative to advance AI for scientific, energy, and national security purposes. Named the Frontiers in Artificial Intelligence for Science, Security and Technology (FASST) initiative, the program aims to leverage the capabilities of the DOE’s 17 national laboratories to build energy-efficient AI supercomputers and create trustworthy AI models for a variety of fields, including clean energy technologies.

Energy Secretary Jennifer Granholm has identified energy consumption as a key concern in advancing AI technology. The DOE already operates some of the world’s fastest supercomputers, which are used for climate change, energy research, and nuclear weapons modernization. The new AI initiative will focus on researching the characteristics of large AI systems to yield scientific breakthroughs.

The implementation of this proposal requires congressional authorization and funding. Bipartisan legislation has been introduced in the Senate to support this initiative. The DOE envisions its role in helping scientists and the broader community create AI models that can drive progress in multiple domains.
